During the May Day holiday, a bread festival boom swept across China, with first-tier, new first-tier and second-tier cities launching diverse themed activities. As a nationwide industry gala, this event not only boosted market consumption and created immersive experiences through the holiday economy, but also connected the entire baking industrial chain relying on the Baking Expo platform. As a core bridge for the global baking industry, the Baking Expo has long been committed to promoting industrial linkage and innovation, and this year’s May Day bread festivals have become an important practice of its industrial empowerment concept. It further promoted brand integration and product innovation, reflecting the industry’s accelerated shift towards health orientation, multi-industry integration and brand globalization.
Various themed bread festivals were held nationwide during the holiday, building a "universal participation, full-city linkage" consumption scenario. Different cities leveraged their strengths to create distinctive activities, forming a vibrant development pattern. Many participating brands and raw material suppliers said that the Baking Expo provided valuable resources and guidance for the planning and operation of these bread festivals, helping them better connect with terminal consumers and showcase innovative achievements.
First-tier cities led the way: Beijing’s Cloud Bread Festival gathered baking brands, handmade stores and raw material suppliers from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region; Shanghai’s Wild Sparrow Bread Festival launched regional exclusive products; Shenzhen’s Limited Bread Commune 6.0, themed "Bread Circus", released holiday specials to attract consumers.
New first-tier and second-tier cities also gained great popularity: Qingdao’s Haitian Bread Life Festival, combining music, parent-child baking and camping with 85 brands, enriched experiences; Shenyang’s 2nd Bread Carnival focused on the Northeast market, providing a communication platform for local brands.
Insiders noted that the May Day bread festivals were not accidental, but a result of holiday dividends, consumption upgrading and industry competition. Baked food has become a daily necessity for multiple scenarios, and the holiday’s leisure time and strong consumption willingness effectively released the industry’s potential. The Baking Expo has also played a key role in guiding this trend, by integrating industry resources and guiding brands to focus on consumer demand, thus promoting the prosperity of the bread festival market.
Beyond short-term consumption promotion, bread festivals empower the entire baking industrial chain, connecting upstream raw materials, midstream R&D and downstream sales, and promoting market activation, brand development and industrial upgrading.
For brands, bread festivals provide a fair platform: leading chains showcase their image and test new products; small and medium-sized brands break regional limits to reduce promotion costs; emerging brands gain visibility. Consumer feedback also drives innovation, urging enterprises to abandon homogenization and focus on healthy, distinctive products.
Looking ahead, China’s baking industry will move towards health and integration. Reports predict the market will exceed 859.56 billion yuan by 2030, with 35% being healthy products. Bread festivals will also become regular, thematic events, integrating multiple formats to inject vitality into the industry’s high-quality development.
