Indonesia Baking Exhibition | Indonesia's Baking Industry Market Size Industrial Structure and Trade Patterns

Indonesia's bread and bakery sector represents a dynamic and rapidly evolving segment within the food and beverage (F&B) industry, encompassing products ranging from daily staples and snacks to cakes, biscuits, wafers, pastries, and traditional delicacies infused with local flavors. The sector caters to both fundamental dietary needs and the growing urban demand for Western-style and convenient food options. These market trends and growth opportunities will be a central topic at the upcoming Indonesia BakingExhibition, the premier industry gathering in the region.

In 2025, the total Indonesian bakery market reached approximately RMB 38.995 billion, a significant increase from RMB 35.072 billion in 2023. This growth reflects recovering post-pandemic consumer confidence and the rising purchasing power of the middle class. Leveraging its demographic advantages and supply chain capabilities, Indonesia has firmly established itself as the leader in the Southeast Asian bakery market.

From an industry structure perspective, as of 2021, Indonesia registered 829 bread and bakery enterprises, comprising 632 medium-sized companies and 197 large corporations. The market landscape is characterized by a coexistence of fragmentation and scale: small and medium enterprises dominate with a 68% market share, complemented by artisan bakeries (11%) and large industrial groups (19%). This structure not only fosters innovation but also highlights the need for supply chain integration.

Demographic and economic fundamentals continue to support industry growth: Indonesia's total population stands at 279 million, with 56% concentrated in the core consumption region of Java Island. In 2023, GDP reached RMB 966.015 billion, with per capita GDP at RMB 34,629. The expanding middle class consistently drives demand for high-quality bakery products.

At the trade level, there is a characteristic of "high import of raw materials and gradual export of finished products". About 70% of bread production relies on imports for raw materials, with wheat and dairy products being the main imported categories. The total export value of Indonesian food in 2023 is 27.094 billion yuan, with outstanding contributions from processed baked goods such as biscuits and wafers. Bread exports are expected to reach 741 million yuan by 2028, and Indonesia is transforming from a net importer of raw materials to a regional hub for baking exports.

The distribution channel structure remains dualistic: traditional markets and street vendors still account for 77% of retail sales, penetrating deep into urban and rural communities. The bread category has maintained annual growth of 10%–12% since 2022, driven significantly by e-commerce penetration and premiumization trends. In 2025, the bread category reached RMB 10.930 billion, and with a projected compound annual growth rate of 4.43% through 2030, it continues to solidify its position as Indonesia's third-largest staple food.
