Baking show | CDC postpones raising farmgate milk price to May 1, 2024
Baking Show recently learned that, the Canadian Dairy Commission has deferred its on-farm milk price revision – a hike of 1.77 percent – to May 1, 2024, from the initially planned February 1, 2024.
This rise corresponds to an additional $0.0153 per litre (or just above one cent per litre).
In a release, the CDC stated:“Similar to the majority of Canadians, dairy producers are confronting the impacts of inflation. Although the costs for feed, fuel, and fertilizers have steadied, the benefits for producers have been negated by rising interest rates.
“This price modification signifies that the expense of milk utilized in the production of dairy goods such as milk, cream, yogurt, cheese, and butter, sold within the retail and foodservice industries, will witness an average uptick of 1.77 percent. The overall effect on the end consumer is also subject to various elements within the supply chain like transportation, distribution, and packaging expenses. The amount remitted to dairy farmers represents merely a fraction of the total cost incurred by consumers.”
The following stakeholders were involved in the review and consultation: Dairy Farmers of Canada, Dairy Processors Association of Canada, Consumers'Association of Canada, Retail Council of Canada, Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and Restaurants Canada.
The revised on-farm milk pricing will be finalized upon receiving approval from the respective provincial regulators.
